Job Description


Under the general supervision of a commanding officer, Police Officers are sworn, general authority law enforcement officers who perform a wide variety of public safety and community care-taking duties including preserving the peace, protecting life and property, enforcing laws and ordinances, deterring and preventing crime, investigating criminal activity and providing public safety education.

Enforces laws and ordinances and complies with guidelines established by applicable laws, regulations, directives and superiors.

Maintains current knowledge of circumstances, trends, practices, laws and legal decisions affecting the law enforcement profession and his or her area of responsibility; familiarizes self with current information relating to department operations and administration.

The eligibility list is a continuous listing and maintained as scores are received from PST.  Follow up applications, and testing including oral board interviews are conducted on an as-needed basis. Vacancies are filled through a Civil Service process with the top three candidates forwarded for thorough background investigations, physical, psychological and polygraph examinations & final selection as vacancies occur.  Timeline from PST to final exam is approximately 1 to 3 months.

Other Applicants may be required to re-take the physical ability test during the background process.
Multiple Scores from Same Applicant Once an applicant’s score is received from PST it will be placed on an eligibility list and it is valid for 1 year. Yakima PD will not consider any other score until that 1 year has passed and the score expires. At that time Yakima PD will consider the next available score from the applicant. We are currently only taking written scores of 75% or higher
