Community Information

Department Information

The Yakima Police Department is a full service police agency offering a wide variety of services to the community. The Department operates out of its main downtown station which includes a 78 bed jail. In addition the Department maintains about 100 prisoners in other facilities.

Job Description

Under the general supervision of a Police Department supervisor, performs specialized duties involving the control and management of detainees in the City Jail, and supervises detainee work crews in the maintenance of public facilities and equipment. Ensures safety and proper treatment of detainees, in accordance with department directives and applicable law. Work is performed in accordance with established procedures, but employees are expected to apply independent judgment in making routine and emergency decisions.

Correction Officers are temporarily working 12-hour schedules. The shift hours are: 0600-1800 and 1800-0600. The rotation is: 2 days on, 2 days off; 3 days on, 2 days off; 2 days on, 3 days off.

The eligibility list is a continuous listing and maintained as scores are received from PST.  Follow up applications, and testing including oral board interviews are conducted on an as-needed basis. Vacancies are filled through a Civil Service process with the top three candidates forwarded for thorough background investigations, physical, psychological and polygraph examinations & final selection as vacancies occur.

Other Applicants may be required to re-take the physical ability test during the background process.
Multiple Scores from Same Applicant Once an applicant’s score is received from PST it will be placed on an eligibility list and it is valid for 1 year. Yakima PD will not consider any other score until that 1 year has passed and the score expires. At that time Yakima PD will consider the next available score from the applicant.
