Job Description

Under the general supervision of a commanding officer, Police Officers are sworn, general authority law enforcement officers who perform a wide variety of public safety and community care-taking duties including preserving the peace, protecting life and property, enforcing laws and ordinances, deterring and preventing crime, investigating criminal activity and providing public safety education.

Enforces laws and ordinances and complies with guidelines established by applicable laws, regulations, directives and superiors.

Maintains current knowledge of circumstances, trends, practices, laws and legal decisions affecting the law enforcement profession and his or her area of responsibility; familiarizes self with current information relating to department operations and administration.

The eligibility list is a continuous listing and maintained as scores are received from PST.  Follow up applications, and testing including oral board interviews are conducted on an as-needed basis. Vacancies are filled through a Civil Service process with the top three candidates forwarded for thorough background investigations, physical, psychological and polygraph examinations & final selection as vacancies occur.

Vision Requirements 20/100 in each eye corrected to 20/20 in the better eye and 20/30 in the lesser eye. Normal color vision required.
Basic Law Enforcement Academy Certification Must have current WA State certification OR if out of state have the ability to successfully complete the WA CJTC equivalency examination within one year of employment. Out of state applicants must be currently certified law enforcement officers in their home state.
Prior Experience Requirement Two years continuous law enforcement service with a civilian Washington State law enforcement agency in the last three years OR two years continuous law enforcement service with a civilian law enforcement agency within the last three years and ability to successfully complete WA CJTC equivalency examination within one year of employment. Out of State applicants must possess the necessary training and experience to become certified in accordance with WA State law.
Multiple Scores from Same Applicant Once an applicant’s score is received from PST it will be placed on an eligibility list and it is valid for 1 year. Yakima PD will not consider any other score until that 1 year has passed and the score expires. At that time Yakima PD will consider the next available score from the applicant.
