Community Information

The City of Snoqualmie also provides police services to the City of North Bend since 2014. Officers find our patrol schedule (5 on, 5 off, 5 on, 4 off) appealing. In addition, we have our own underground 6 lane shooting range. Internal specialties include detectives and school resource officer. We are also a member of the Coalition of Small Cities and Major Crimes Task Force, both of which provide opportunities for personal development as an officer.

Job Description

SUMMARY:

An employee in this class performs general law enforcement duties. Work includes patrolling the Cities of Snoqualmie and North Bend during an assigned shift in a vehicle; preventing, detecting, and investigating disturbances and crime; serving various civil and criminal papers; responding to calls; apprehending suspects; and executing related assignments. Employees must exercise judgment, initiative and calm control when performing duties; more difficult problems are normally carried out under the direction of or in conjunction with a Sergeant assigned to the same shift. Work involves frequent public contact which requires tact, firmness, and decisiveness. Work is performed in accordance with departmental policy and state and federal law, supplemented with specific directions from superior officers. Employees are subject to hazards associated with law enforcement work including working in both inside and outside environments, in extreme hot and cold weather, and exposure to various hazards such as dangerous persons, loud noises, and hazardous spills with fumes, oils, gases, or flammable liquids. Work may subject employee to compliance with final OSHA Standards on blood borne pathogens. Work is performed under regular supervision and is evaluated through observation, discussion and review of reports for adherence to laws, department procedures, and proper judgment.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

These duties are not inclusive of all duties, and as such, this position may perform other duties as assigned.

A School Resource Officer is a career Law Enforcement Officer, with sworn authority, deployed in community-oriented policing, and assigned by the employing police agency to work in collaboration with schools and community-based organizations:

A. To address crime and disorder problems, violence, and drug activities affecting or occurring in or around schools.

B. To develop or expand crime prevention efforts for students.

C. To educate likely school-age victims in crime prevention and safety.

D. To assist in the identification of physical changes in the environment that may reduce crime in or around school; and

E. To assist in developing school policy that addresses crime and to recommend procedural changes.


QUALIFICATIONS:

General Minimum Qualifications

· Be at least 21 years of age.

· Graduation from State Accredited Police Academy.

· Previous criminal justice experience required; Lateral applicants currently working in a school environment or as a police school resource officer are preferred.

· Successful completion of basic school resource officer course preferred.

· High degree of honesty, integrity, and regard for confidential information.

· False statements, lack of candor, cheating or failure to fully divulge requested information will result in disqualification from the hiring process.


Education and Experience:

· High school graduation or equivalent

· Any combination of prior education and experience which would provide the desired skills, knowledge and ability required to perform the job.

Licensing and Certification:

  • Valid Washington State Driver’s License with driving record free of serious or frequent violations.
  • Basic First Aid and CPR Certificate (or ability to obtain upon hire).
  • Successful completion of required criminal background check as well as physical, technical (firearms), psychological and medical examinations as required by law or department standards.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of:

· Criminal justice system and associated terminology.

· General knowledge of Washington State public records laws, practices, and policies.

· Limits of authority for this position and others within the Police department.

· Modern administrative practices related to scheduling, record keeping, communications, and operation of modern office equipment and software (including but not limited to Word, Excel, Outlook, fax/scan, filing systems).

· Safe work practices.

· Effective public relations and customer service techniques/principles, including skill in working with diverse populations and cultures.

Ability to:

· Maintain confidentiality of records information as appropriate.

· Recall names, faces and details of incidents easily and with a high degree of accuracy.

· Communicate and express ideas effectively with respect and appropriate etiquette with

supervisors, peers, colleagues, and the public.

· Obtain accurate, complete, descriptive information by telephone, and translate information taken into required form and format.

· Operate in situations of high stress and communicate with persons in physical and/or emotional distress.

· Critically analyze information in time sensitive situations and respond quickly and appropriately with clear recommendations or a course of action.

· Meet physical requirements of the position which can include restraining violent persons.

· Aid in life threatening situations, including administering First Aid and CPR.

· Work in a team and independently with little supervision and prioritize work to meet required deadlines.

· Operate a personal computer and applicable modern office software.

· Work an extended schedule beyond that of scheduled hours as needed.

Physical Demands and Work Environment:

The physical demands and work environment described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this position.

Work is performed both in the office and in the field in a variety of weather conditions. Physical effort may be required to restrain subjects in custody and occasional lifting in excess of 50lbs. on a regular basis (see details below). Physical hazard exists from traffic accidents, unruly citizens and subjects in custody.

Administrative work involves sitting for prolonged periods of time, walking, talking, hearing, using hands to handle, feel or operate objects, tools or controls and reach with hands and arms. Vision abilities required by this position include close vision and the ability to adjust focus. Hand-eye coordination and fine manipulation skills are necessary to operate computers and office equipment. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

Heavy Work: Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force

frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Salary Information

$39.53- $52.84 hourly DOE, plus benefits. Additionally, SRO receives 4% specialty pay.
