Mason County maintains a continuous eligibility list for Entry Level and Lateral Deputy Sheriff.

Salary Information

For Lateral Patrol Deputy the starting pay will depend on applicants experience.

  • 2025 Salary:   $7,026 - $8,526 per month
  • Education Incentive; AA=1.5%, BA= 3.0%, and a Master’s=4.5%
  • Along with sick time, holiday time, and vacation time, there are an additional 5 floating/premium days per year

Basic Law Enforcement Academy Certification

Yes, must have current certification by the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission or equivalent state-approved basic law enforcement academy certification from another state, and

Must meet minimum qualifications of a Mason County deputy sheriff; and

Must have the ability to obtain an equivalency certification within the first twelve (12) months of employment by meeting the standards of the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission.

Prior Experience Requirement

Yes, must have successfully completed the testing process and been hired by another jurisdiction from a civil service commission certified eligibility list or other like process; and

Must have successfully completed a probationary period with the current or previous employer; and

Must have been continuously employed by the present or previous employer as a general authority police officer or deputy sheriff with a general authority law enforcement agency in the United States, performing general authority enforcement of the criminal and traffic laws of that state, in either a patrol or investigative capacity, for at least twelve (12) months.
