Kitsap County Sheriff's Office values the wellness of our Corrections staff. We offer a work schedule that consists of 10 hr. 40 minute shifts, which consists of workweeks that are 5 days on/4 days off two weeks in a row, and then 5 days on/5 days off the third week.

Kitsap County was founded in 1857, and was originally named Slaughter County. Kitsap County occupies a unique portion of the State of Washington, directly between the urban areas of Seattle and Tacoma and the wilderness of the Olympic Mountains. The current population of Kitsap County is estimated at a little over 250,000 according to the U.S. Census Bureau. The County seat is located in the town of Port Orchard. Kitsap County is situated along the western shore of the central Puget Sound region. It comprises a total land mass of 393 square miles (or 0.6 percent of the state's total land mass). As such, Kitsap County ranks 36th in size among Washington counties and is the 3rd most densely populated county in the state.

The eligibility list is a continuous listing and maintained as scores are received from PST with oral board interviews conducted on an as-needed basis. Vacancies are filled by Civil Service "rule of five" with the top five candidates forwarded to the appointing authority for background investigation & selection as vacancies occur.

Felony Conviction(s) as an Adult LEGAL STANDARDS:

Because of the nature of employment with the Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office a candidate must be in good standing with the community and the criminal justice system. The following is the maximum allowable contact with the criminal justice system.

Automatic Disqualifier - Any Felony convictions, Domestic violence conviction of any kind, Since turning 18, 3 or more misdemeanor convictions, and misdemeanor convictions in the last 3 years.

Felony and Misdemeanor convictions under the age of 18 will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
Felony Conviction(s) as a Juvenile Felony and misdemeanor convictions under the age of 18 will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
Ability to Read, Speak & Write the English Language Read, write and speak the English language, so as to be easily understood by others.
Vision Requirements Visual acuity cannot be worse than 20/100 in each eye without correction and corrected to 20/20 in the better eye and 20/30 in the lesser eye.
College Requirement No
Basic Corrections Academy Certification Washington State Criminal Justice Corrections Academy or have an equivalent certification from another state recognized basic corrections academy.
Prior Experience Requirement
  • High school diploma or General Education Degree (GED); AND
  • Completion of Washington State Criminal Justice Corrections Academy or completed the Department of Corrections CORE program from 1/2004 – 7/2021, or have an equivalent certification that is recognized by CJTC; AND
  • Successful completion of the agency's corrections FTO/training programs.
  • Successfully complete WSCJTC Equivalency Academy within one year of hire.

Note: Applicants that have been separated from employment for more than one year as a federal, state, county or municipal Corrections Officer do not qualify for the lateral position and can apply for the Corrections Officer 1 position.

Applicants will be disqualified if they have resigned in lieu of being terminated for cause or were discharged for disqualifying misconduct from a correctional or other law enforcement position, in accordance with RCW 43.101.
