Kitsap County was founded in 1857, and was originally named Slaughter County. The people of Kitsap County are represented by three County Commissioners and are served by a variety of local elected offices, including the Kitsap County Sheriff, and other county departments. Kitsap County occupies a unique portion of the State of Washington, directly between the urban areas of Seattle and Tacoma and the wilderness of the Olympic Mountains. It is bounded by the Hood Canal on the west, Puget Sound on the east, and Mason and Pierce Counties to the south.


The current population of Kitsap County is estimated at a little over 250,000 according to the U.S. Census Bureau. The County seat is located in the town of Port Orchard. Kitsap County is situated along the western shore of the central Puget Sound region. It comprises a total land mass of 393 square miles (or 0.6 percent of the state's total land mass). As such, Kitsap County ranks 36th in size among Washington counties and is the 3rd most densely populated county in the state.

January 2022 -- KCSO is currently hiring for entry level female and male applicants.

 

The eligibility list is a continuous listing and maintained as scores are received from PST with oral board interviews conducted on an as-needed basis. Vacancies are filled by Civil Service "rule of five" with the top five candidates forwarded to the appointing authority for background investigation & selection as vacancies occur.

The following are automatic and potential disqualifiers. Applicants should not apply to our agency if they indicate any of the automatic disqualifiers. Potential disqualifiers will be considered on a case by case basis.

Automatic Suspension of driver's license within past 3 years.
Automatic More than two moving violations in the past 12 months, more than 3 over the last three years, or more than 5 over the last five years.
Automatic 2 or more at-fault accidents in past 5 years.
Automatic Reckless - Convicted once in the last three years, or twice in the last five years for reckless driving or other similar offenses (e.g. careless driving).
Automatic Convicted in the last five years for any driving offense involving the use of drugs, alcohol, or any controlled substance.
Automatic Convicted in the last five years for a hit and run offense involving bodily injury or reportable property damage.
Automatic Found at fault in any accident in the last five years resulting in a fatality.
Automatic More than one citation or conviction in the last year, three or more in the last three years or five or more in the last five years (Note: Do not include “Photo Enforcement Tickets,” which count as parking tickets.)
Drug Usage
Automatic Any usage of illegal drugs over the allowed standard is an automatic disqualifier. Each category mentioned below includes all forms and derivatives of these controlled substances. Your past drug usage will be confirmed by a background investigation and polygraph/computerized voice stress analysis examination.
Automatic No abuse of prescription medications and/or over the counter medications.
Automatic Marijuana/Hashish: No use/possession within the past six (6) months or within six (6) months of applying for any Law Enforcement position.
Automatic Illegal use/possession of Narcotics such as: Amphetamines, Cocaine, Hallucinogens, and Opiates: No use/possession for the last 3 years.
Automatic Any use of intravenous illegal drugs is an automatic disqualifier.
Criminal Activity
