Important Information

Applicants for lateral entry into the Police Department must have been employed as full-time law enforcement officers with a civilian law enforcement agency within the last twenty-four (24) months. That employment must have lasted a minimum of one year. Applicants shall have successfully completed probation and possess current basic certification upon application from the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission (WSCJTC), which can be obtained by successfully completing the WSCJTC Basic Law Enforcement Academy. Out of state candidates, who have been previously certified in another state, must pass the WSCJTC equivalency examination. All candidates must submit a City of Ephrata Application and successfully pass an oral board interview. The Lateral Entry selection process will be separate and apart from that of entry level and will have a separate eligibility list combined with the Academy Graduate applicants. The appointing authority shall request a background, psychological and polygraph test upon conditional letter of hire.

Ephrata Police Department’s current authorized staffing consists of 16 sworn Officers and 3 civilian support staff. Patrol Officers work 12-hour shifts with two 3-day weekends (Friday-Sunday) each month. Specialty assignments include, Bike patrol, Tactical Response Team (TRT), Field Training Officer and Detective.

Vacancies are filled by Civil Service "rule of five" with the top five candidates forwarded to the appointing authority for background investigation & selection as vacancies occur.

Salary Information

Police Officer salary range for 2023:  Base = $5,913; 1-3 years = $6,287/month; 4-5 years = $6,531; 6+ years = $6,804.  Probationary pay will depend on qualifications.
