Community Information

Wapato is situated in Central Washington, approximately 10 miles South of Yakima on the Yakima Nation Indian Reservation. Our community is made up of approximately 5000 people and our economy is primarily agricultural.  

Department Information

The Police Department works hard to protect and serve the residents of Wapato. They offer a variety of investigative, preventative, and community policing programs. Their goal is to listen to you and work with you about your concerns in the community. 

The Wapato Police Department is currently staffed with 7 officers, excluding the Chief, and 2 support staff.  The Department seeks to add 3 more officers and plans to expand the service and capabilities of the agency.  The agency is currently working on plans to build a new Police/Court facility, is updating and advancing all of its vehicles and equipment, and is advancing its position in the community that includes being the first agency in the Yakima Valley to employ body-worn cameras.

The City offers an excellent pay and benefit package that is comparable to other agencies in the area.  Starting Salary begins at $4506/month - $54,080/annual to $5642/month - $67704/annual, for the current year.  Lateral officers may be started at an accelerated level depending upon experience.

The eligibility list is a continuous listing and maintained as scores are received from PST with oral board interviews conducted on an as-needed basis. Vacancies are filled by Civil Service "rule of three" with the top three candidates forwarded to the appointing authority for background investigation & selection as vacancies occur.

Salary Information

$4641.00 to $5811.00 a month depending on qualifications and experience. 

Benefit Information

Medical, Dental and Vision coverage, with employee/spouse covered at 100%. Sick time is accrued at 8 hours a month with a maximum accrual of 960 hours.  Officers receive13 paid holidays per year with one additional "floating" holiday,   Take-home cars are assigned living within a 25 mile radius of the City.  Vacation days are earned beginning with 12 days a per year and increase per union contract.  Longevity pay begins at 7 years, plus additional incentive for education for AA degree at $61.00 per month and $122 a month for a BA/BS degree in the following fields of study: Police Science, Political Science, Sociology, Psychology, or Business Administration.  Officers receive a clothing allowance of $1,050.00 a year after the additional uniform/equipment issue. Additional pay incentives include bilingual Spanish, Field Training Officer, and various instructor positions.
