Community Information

Incorporated in 1907, the City of Toppenish is located in Central Washington and is situated about 20 miles southeast of the City of Yakima. The City covers approximately two square miles and has a population of 9,000 residents. The City of Toppenish has preserved its beginnings as a rugged western town through restoration and beautification efforts that make it a popular tourist attraction today. At the heart of the City and its beautification are over 70 outdoor, historical murals. They tell the story of early development of the City of Toppenish, and its rich history and cultural diversity. Recreational opportunities include golfing, museums, theater, Toppenish Wildlife Refuge, tee pee camping, casino gaming, and the 4th of July Toppenish Pow Wow and Rodeo. The City is located with easy access to the Columbia River, Ft. Simcoe, and the Cascade Mountain range skiing, snowmobiling, and snowboarding. The Yakima Valley is also home to pow wows, rodeos, fresh fruit and produce, and many wineries.

Department Information

The Toppenish Police Department consists of a Police Chief who supervises the Police Department. 1 Captain, 3 Sergeants, and 9 Police Officers.  We are a 24/7 agency.  Officers work a 12-hour shift schedule.  Dispatch services are contracted through the City of Sunnyside, WA.

Hiring Status

The eligibility list is a continuous listing and maintained as oral board interviews are conducted on an as-needed basis. Vacancies are filled by Civil Service "rule of five" with the top five candidates forwarded to the appointing authority for background investigation & selection as vacancies occur. PST applications are held until the oral board is conducted.

Salary Information

Effective 1/1/2024: $5,810 - $7,000 per month (6 steps)  

Additional 10% FTO premium pay; $50.00/mo. Interpreter Pay; $50.00 Instructor Pay per event; and longevity pay after 7 years from 1.0% to 3.0%  Additional pay incentives based on position.

Benefit Information

Medical insurance is paid at 100% for employees and 90% for dependents.  Dental and Vision is paid at 100% for employees and dependents.  Employee life insurance is provided; vacation and sick leave pay; longevity pay; state retirement program; employee assistance program.  Worked holidays are paid at double-time rate. Take home vehicle provided.
