Community Information

Steilacoom became the first incorporated town in Washington Territory in 1854. Located between the city of Tacoma, on the North, and the State Capital in Olympia, approximately twenty miles to the South, the Town stretches 2.1 square miles atop a bluff overlooking the Puget Sound and the Olympic mountain range. The southern boundary of Steilacoom is Fort Lewis, an active U.S. Army base. The town, with a population of 6,800, is primarily residential development with many attractive homes, beaches and parks. Most residents are employed in the surrounding metropolitan area or by the many government facilities located nearby. Steilacoom is the terminus of the County operated ferry system serving Ketron Island, Anderson Island, and the State operated ferry system serving McNeil Island State Corrections Center. Pierce Transit provides regular bus service.

Vacancies are filled by Civil Service "rule of three" with the top three candidates forwarded to the appointing authority for background investigation & selection as vacancies occur.

Public Safety Officer $44.17- $51.70/Hr. (2024 rates)
