The San Juan County Sheriff’s Office is currently offering a $5000 hiring bonus for entry level applicants and a $10,000 hiring bonus for a lateral applicant.

The Sheriff’s Office currently has 20 fulltime commissioned officers. The islands are separated into 4 main districts with a substation on 3 districts. Deputies are expected to live on the island they are serving.

Community Information

San Juan County is a beautiful island community located the in the extreme northwest portion of Puget Sound on the Canadian border. It is a popular destination area for boaters from all over the world, and more importantly, is a perfect place to raise a family. The San Juan Islands consist of 174 islands. Most are uninhabited or privately owned. There are four main islands, San Juan, Orcas, Lopez and Shaw Islands, all linked to the mainland by the Washington State Ferries out of Anacortes. The majority of San Juan County citizens live on these four islands. The county seat is located in the only incorporated town in the islands, Friday Harbor, on San Juan Island. San Juan Island has the largest population concentration with over 7,000 islanders.

Department Information

The Sheriff of San Juan County maintains his office, the E-911 Communications Center and jail facility at the San Juan County Courthouse complex in Friday Harbor. The Undersheriff, Chief Civil Deputy, Chief Criminal Deputy, two detectives, two corrections deputies, one courthouse security deputy, eight patrol deputies, eleven E-911 Communications Operators, and two clerks work out of this office. The remainder of the thirty-five employees are assigned to Districts 2 and 3; Orcas Island, District 2, has the second largest concentration of islanders with a population of over 4,000. There are five patrol deputies and one sergeant assigned to this district. Lopez Island, District 3, has three patrol deputies and one sergeant. 

The San Juan County Sheriff’s Office provides a competitive compensation package for both entry-level candidates and veteran law enforcement specialists. All deputies are resident deputies and assigned a patrol vehicle that is taken home. There is a pay incentive for education, foreign language, and physical fitness.
