Job Description

General Job Description

Officers will generally patrol in clearly marked vehicles, patrol assigned jurisdictional areas of City of Milton, respond to calls for assistance, act as a deterrent to crime, enforce state and local laws and respond to emergencies 24 hours per day seven days per week.

Patrol will generally provide the following services within the limits of available resources:

  1. Patrol that is directed at the prevention of criminal acts, traffic violations and collisions, the maintenance of public order, and the discovery of hazardous situations or conditions.
  2. Crime prevention activities such as residential inspections, business inspections, community presentations, etc.
  3. Calls for service, both routine and emergency in nature.
  4. Investigation of both criminal and non-criminal acts.
  5. The apprehension of criminal offenders.
  6. Community Oriented Policing and Problem Solving activities such as citizen assists and individual citizen contacts of a positive nature.
  7. The sharing of information between the Patrol and other divisions within the Department, as well as other outside governmental agencies.
  8. The application of resources to specific problems or situations within the community, which may be improved or resolved by Community Oriented Policing and problem solving strategies.
  9. Traffic direction and control.

Hiring Status

Milton Police Department - Lateral Police Officer has 2 vacancies.

Milton Washington PD is currently hiring Lateral officers.  Entry-Lateral Officers at MPD have completed BLEA and not finished a complete FTO process.  Experienced-Laterals at MPD have successfully completed an FTO program with another agency.

Vacancies are filled by Civil Service "rule of five" with the top five candidates forwarded to the appointing authority for background investigation & selection as vacancies occur.

Salary Information

2025 Academy start $7271/month

2025 Entry-Lateral start at Step A $7614/month.

2025 Experienced-Lateral start at Step B $7977/month. DOE

2025 Experienced-Lateral start at Step C $8355/month. DOE

2025 Experienced-Lateral start at Step D $8754/month. DOE

Effective January 1st 2026, the monthly base pay rates for employees covered by this agreement shall increase by the Seattle/Bellevue/Tacoma Cost of Living Index. This will mean a 3% minimum and 5% maximum wage increase.

Milton is in both King and Pierce Counties and have had assigned take-home vehicles. Each Officer receives all initial uniforms and equipment including Duty pistol and Back-up Pistol, .223 Patrol Rifle, Less-lethal 12ga and Taser X7. Officers receive an additional $1200/yr. uniform allowance every year after completion of probation.

Officers can receive a 2.5% bonus for each Specialty, max 5%. Additional 2% for AA degree, 4% for BA/BS degree. Additional 5% FTO pay. 2% longevity beginning at year 5. $100/mo. City paid deferred Compensation. $100/mo. City paid HRA/VEBA.

Longevity-In addition to the pay and bonuses listed above the city pays longevity based upon years of service. Longevity steps are as follows.

Year 5-9 2% of Base Wage

Year 10-14 3% of Base Wage

Year Over 15 4% of Base Wage

Benefit Information

Medical is covered through LEOFF Health and Welfare Trust Plan F at 90%. The city also pays $100 per month into an HRS/VEBA account for the benefit of the employee.  The health plan also includes Vision plan with additional 100% Vision through AWC Vision Service Plan.  City covers 100% AWC Dental Plan F with additional AWC Orthodontia Rider Plan V $2000/lifetime.  Opt-out, an employee may elect to opt out of Medical insurance coverage for spouse and or dependents provided they have medical insurance through another provider for them.  Employees who opt out can receive 50% of the Cities share of the monthly premium as compensation for each month the employer does not have to pay the premium.

The city also provides a $1200 per year uniform allowance.  This is additional to the following uniforms listed below after time of hire.

Basic Law Enforcement Academy Certification Must be a graduate of the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission (WSCJTC) Basic Law Enforcement Academy and hold current certification with no break in service longer than a 24 month period OR a graduate of an equivalent training academy from a state that has reciprocity with the WSCJTC and hold current certification with no break in service longer than a 24 month period and must successfully complete the WSCJTC Equivalency Academy and examination after appointment.
