Important Information

Lateral Incentive

Upon hiring, a lateral or experienced police officer will be eligible to receive up to a $40,000 hiring incentive as follows:

  1. $5,000 with first regular paycheck.
  2. $17,500 following successful completion of the 12-month probationary period.
  3. $17,500 after six months of permanent employment status after the probationary period.

The officer will be required to sign a Lateral Incentive Agreement to receive the incentive.

The Mercer Island Police Department employs 31 commissioned officers, who serve in a variety of capacities to include Criminal Investigations, Street Patrol, and Marine Patrol. The department offers opportunities for career development in a variety of areas. Specialty assignment opportunities are available to all qualified officers. Specialty assignments include but are not limited to: Marine Patrol, Dive Team, Emergency Management, Crime Prevention Officer, School Resource Officer, Bicycle Patrol, Detectives, and Tactical Response Unit. Officers receive a high level of continuous training and may choose specific areas of focus.

Salary Information

$88,483 - 132,461 (including longevity), 2% AA / 5% BA Education Incentive, 2% Fitness Premium, 2% Nights Premium, 1% Bi-lingual Premium.

Laterals can be brought in at a higher step for starting salary based on experience. Premiums are stackable and applied to your base.

Benefit Information

Medical, dental, and vision coverage; Long-term Disability; Life insurance; Uniforms and equipment provided; Longevity pay; Deferred Comp Retirement program; LEOFF 2 retirement system. Max vacation accrual is 16 hrs per month. Officers also receive 16 hours of sick leave per month, 130 hours of Holiday annually, and 144 hours of Kelly time annually.

Prior Experience Requirement Experienced Applicants: To qualify for this category the applicant must have been a full-time, fully commissioned and certified law enforcement officer with less than twenty-four (24) months of the last thirty-six (36) months in that position.

Lateral Applicants: To qualify for this category, the applicant will need to have been a full-time, fully commissioned and certified law enforcement officer with at least twenty-four (24) months of the last thirty-six (36) months in that position.
