 Minimum Qualifications

  • Must have been employed as a full time paid law enforcement officer with a municipal, county or state law enforcement agency for at least 12 months, continually, within the last 36 months.
  • Must have satisfactorily completed the Washington State Basic Law Enforcement Officer course or meet the standards prescribed by the Washington State Training Agency Commission for Equivalency.

Lateral Hiring Bonus

  • Applicants hired as lateral police officers will receive a twenty thousand dollar ($25,000) incentive. Ten thousand dollars ($10,000) will be paid following the start of employment.  Five thousand dollars ($5,000) will be paid upon upon successful achievement of solo status. Five thousand dollars ($5,000) will be paid upon successful completion of their probationary period. Five thousand dollars ($5,000) will be paid upon successful completion of their second year of service. Lateral officers are only eligible to participate in the incentive program once. Lateral officers will be credited with vacation accrual consistent with their prior experience up to seven (7) years of service.

The City of Lynnwood is conveniently located just 15 miles north of Seattle. A community of approximately 36,000 covering an area of 7.86 square miles, Lynnwood serves as the commercial heart of South Snohomish County. Centrally located with easy access to I-5, I-405, and Highway 99, Lynnwood is ideal for businesses and residents looking for a place to call home. The community is home to Alderwood, one of the largest shopping malls and retail centers in Washington State. Because of its central location, well-designed office parks, and commercial services, Lynnwood has a number of major employers in the area including Edmonds Community College and Group Health Medical. Lynnwood boasts a diverse citizenry, with over 25% of its population from various ethnic groups. Lynnwood is identified as a regional growth center Core City by the Puget Sound Regional Council and is the only Core City solely located in Snohomish County, as well as the only Core City located between Everett and Northgate (Seattle) along the I-5 corridor.

Department Information

The Lynnwood Police Department employs 120 personnel, 70 of whom are sworn police officers. The police department boasts numerous specialty and collateral assignments. Officers have ample opportunities for training and advancement.

The Police Department is organized into two bureaus, each headed by a Deputy Chief of Police:

The Bureau of Field Operations consists of the Patrol Division (one commander, five sergeants, four patrol squads, a Crime Scene Technician Unit, and four K-9 teams), the Detention Division, the Traffic Section (comprised of collision investigators, motor officers and DUI/DRE officers), the Special Operations Section, the Animal Control Unit and the Reserve Officer Unit.

The Bureau of Investigations and Services consists of the Criminal Investigation Division, the Community Services and Administration Division, the Narcotics Unit, the Planning, Training and Accreditation Section, the Support Services Section and the Property/Evidence Section. In addition, two regional contingency teams, the North Sound Metro SWAT team and the Snohomish County ALERT team, are staffed by various members of LPD.

Within the Police Department is a Detention Division, which operates the Lynnwood Municipal Jail. The jail is classified as a holding facility and incarcerates misdemeanor offenders only. The City of Lynnwood operates a municipal court, which is not a part of the Police Department but is co-located in the same building.

The Police Department is accredited with the Washington Association of Sheriff's and Police Chiefs (WASPC).

Salary Information

Excellent wages ranging from a base annual rate of $93,412-$109.782 plus benefits.

Benefit Information

Additional pays include:

Longevity Premium Pay (5th year, 10th year, 15th year, and after 20th year).

Educational Premium Pay for 45 credits, AA, BA and MA. Bonus ranges from 1.95% to 6.85%. College tuition reimbursement program through masters degree level in approved fields.

Overtime at time and a half paid for work in excess of scheduled hours, court time or call-backs.

Assignment/Specialty Pays of 3-5% for specialty duties/assignments including, K-9, Special Operations Section, Traffic-Motor Officers, Detectives, Narcotics, Drone Pilots, Crime Scene Technicians, Drug Recognition Experts, School Resource Officers, bi-lingual, etc.

12-hour Patrol shift schedule.

10-hour Specialty unit schedules.

Participation in the State of Washington LEOFF II Retirement System.

ICMA Deferred Compensation Program and city matching contributions.

Eleven paid holidays and two floating holidays per year. Paid vacation of 80 hours to 210 hours (after 20 years) annually.

Annual sick leave allowance as provided by State Statute (RCW 41.26), accrued at the rate of eight hours per month.

Medical, dental, vision, and life insurance coverage provided. Employer pays 100% of the medical, dental and vision premiums for the employee and 90% of dependent premiums for medical and dental except that the employer pays 100% of dependent premiums if you enroll in the Regence High Deductible Health Plan.

Supplemental LEOFF II disability income insurance plan.

Bereavement/emergency leave program.

Uniforms and equipment provided and maintained by the City with monthly clothing cleaning allowance.
