Department Information

The City of Bothell Police Department's mission is to protect life and property through professional service and a proactive partnership with our community. The Bothell Police Department has 77 commissioned officers and 19 civilian employees. The Department is made up of four major divisions, Operations, Investigations, Risk Management and Support Services. Each division is structured with different units providing many specialty services, including the Community Crime Reduction Team, K-9, SWAT, Hostage Negotiations Team, Traffic/Motor Officers, Training, Professional Standards, Snohomish Multiple Agency Response Team, Remotely Operated Aerial System pilots and  School/Campus Resource Officers.

Benefit Information

Summary of Benefits Bothell Police Officers Guild

Salary and benefits are bargained for by the Bothell Police Officers Guild and are subject to change. The benefits listed below are the current benefits based on the January 1, 2024, through December 31, 2026, Bothell Police Officers Guild Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Benefits may be prorated for mid-year hires.

NOTE: Represented employees may receive some or all of the benefits listed below based on the union contract. Those employees should consult their union agreement for specific information about their benefits.


Medical/Dental/Vision Insurance

The City pays 100% of the premium for employee and 90% of the premium for spouse and dependents up to age 26.

Administered by Association of Washington Cities (AWC) and employees are offered their choice of medical coverage:

- A High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP) with an associated Health Reimbursement Arrangement (HRA); the City contributes to the HRA: $4,000/year for employee only or $8,000/year for a family.

- Kaiser Permanente 200 (an HMO Plan); the City contributions to an HRA: $300/year for employee only or $600/year for a family.

Dental Insurance

The City pays 100% of the premium for employee and 90% of the premium for spouse and dependents up to age 26.

Dental coverage is offered through Delta Dental. It is an incentive plan with an annual maximum benefit of $1,500. Orthodontia coverage is also included with a matching benefit.

The plan is administered by Association of Washington Cities (AWC).

Vision Insurance

The City pays 100% of the premium for employee, spouse and dependents up to age 26.

Vision coverage is offered through Vision Services Plan (VSP) and is administered by Association of Washington Cities (AWC).

Life & AD&D Insurance

The City pays 100% of the premium for employee.

A group term life insurance policy is offered with a $100,000 benefit.

Accidental Death and Dismemberment (AD&D) coverage and a seatbelt benefit are also included.

Supplemental insurance is available for employee, spouse and/or dependents at group rates.

State Pension Plan

Employees are enrolled in the Washington Department of Retirement Systems, Law Enforcement Officers and Firefighters (LEOFF) Pension Plan. Disability Protection

Employees are offered a disability policy providing income protection of 66.67% of their pre-disability earnings after a 30-day waiting period.

Accidental Death and Dismemberment (AD&D) coverage and supplemental life insurance are also included. Employee Assistance Program

Confidential counseling assessments and referral services are available to employees and family members for personal and/or work-related issues. Flexible Spending Account

Employees may elect to create two separate tax-free accounts through salary reduction. One account is to pay for health-related expenses and the other account is for dependent care costs. Deferred Compensation Program

A 457(b) program is offered in which employees may set aside a portion of their earnings on a tax deferred basis for retirement purposes.

The City provides a match of up to the total of 3.25% of the employee’s base earnings.

Vacation Leave

Lateral police officers shall earn vacation leave commensurate with their years of service as a commissioned civilian police officer as determined by the Chief of Police. Newly hired lateral police officers will be credited with 24 hours of vacation leave than can be used immediately upon hire.

Sick Leave

Employees accrue 4 hours of sick leave per pay period, beginning the first day of employment. WA State Paid Leave

Washington workers are entitled to take up to 12 weeks of paid leave starting in 2020. Payroll deductions begin in 2019.

Holidays

Employees receive 104 hours of holiday leave annually.

Honesty and Integrity are essential traits for a successful career in Law Enforcement. Any false statements, lack of candor, cheating, or failure to fully divulge requested information will result in immediate disqualification from the hiring process.

Successfully pass a background investigation that includes a complete criminal records check, a polygraph examination, and a psychological examination.

This investigation will include an inquiry into whether the applicant has any past or present affiliations with extremist organizations and a review of the applicant's social media accounts.

Satisfactorily complete a medical examination per the Public Safety Civil Service Commission standards.
