A southwestern suburb of Chicago, the Plainfield Fire Protection District protects approximately 54 square miles and has a population of about 60,000 residents. Located in the northwest corner of Will County and along the eastern edge of Kendall County, the district protects the majority of the Village of Plainfield, portions of the City of Crest Hill, Village of Oswego and unincorporated areas within Plainfield, Wheatland, and Na-Au-Say townships.

Job Description

Job Summary:

Skilled emergency firefighting and emergency medical services work. Work involves responsibility for participating in the provision of emergency medical services, the performance of rescue, and fire suppression and prevention, as well as all duties delegated by law, ordinance, rule, or regulation, or practice or procedures. Work involves the operation of fire and emergency medical services equipment and the maintenance of equipment, apparatus, and quarters. Employees are required to participate in the operation of apparatus and perform hazardous tasks and skilled medical procedures under emergency conditions, which may involve strenuous exertion under such adverse conditions as fire, heat, smoke, darkness, and cramped surroundings.  Although firefighting and emergency medical services work are the essential and most difficult and critical areas of activity, a substantial portion of time is spent training and studying methods, techniques, and procedures, department property and equipment. Work is usually performed in accordance with general instructions and well-defined procedures, under the command of a superior officer. Work is reviewed through observation, inspections, and reports for results obtained.

The Plainfield Fire Protection District is currently testing to create our eligibility list.  We anticipate hiring 5 candidates at the beginning of 2027 in preparation for our Station 5 opening.

Salary Information

Starting Base Salary:  $75,296.79; Top out at $109,657.47 at year 7 (based on current CBA 01/01/2024-12/31/2027)

Paid Certifications up to additional $4,500 annually; Specialty Team Stipends of $500 per Team

96 Hours of Straight Time Paid Annually for Holidays

Longevity of $2550 added to salary after 10 Years of Service

Must be 20 years old to apply and be 21 years old at the time of the conditional offer of employment.

Veterans Preference Points

Veteran’s Preference Points – 5 points

Applicants who served in the United States military actively for at least one (1) year and who were honorably discharged or are now on inactive or reserve duty shall be preferred for employment and shall receive a total of five (5) preference points. Proof of such service must include a copy of Military Form DD-214 (long form) as proof of active service, evidence of the honorable discharge and a sworn affidavit by the applicant.

At the end of the testing period, the District will create an Initial Eligibility Roster, which will be sent to all passing candidates. Candidates will have ten (10) days after the date of the Initial Eligibility Roster to upload documents to claim Preference Points

Other Preference Points

Experience Preference Points – up to 5 points

All applicants currently in the Cadet Program for the District, will be awarded preference points for their experience. 2 points will be awarded for being enrolled in the program. 5 points will be awarded if you completed one year in the Cadet Program. Max of 5 points.

OR

Applicants from outside the District who were employed as full-time firefighters or firefighter-paramedics by a fire protection district or municipality for at least 2 years may be awarded up to 2 preference points for this category. No experience preference points will be awarded under this section to applicants for service with a private employer who had a contract for fire or ambulance service with a fire protection district or municipality. Max of 2 points. (Employed for at least 2 years and ½ point per year of employment)

Educational Preference Points – up to 4 points

Any applicant who has successfully obtained an associate’s degree in the field of fire service or emergency medical services, or a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university may receive preference points.

2 pts - Associates Degree related to Fire Science

4 pts - Bachelors’ Degree related to Fire Science

2 pts - Bachelors’ Degree not related to Fire Science

Residency Preference Points – up to 3 points

All applicants whose principal residence is located within the District’s jurisdiction.

Current residents of Plainfield Fire Protection District shall receive a total of 1 preference point per year adding up to 3 points maximum (proof: Driver’s License AND bank statement, utility bill or mortgage/rent.

At the end of the testing period, the District will create an Initial Eligibility Roster, which will be sent to all passing candidates. Candidates will have ten (10) days after the date of the Initial Eligibility Roster to upload documents to claim Preference Points

Firefighter 2 Certification Certified OSFM BOF/FFII, recognition of completion will be accepted.
Paramedic Certification Certified Paramedic at time of hire. Must be enrolled in paramedic school at time of application. 
CPAT Must have a valid CPAT issued within 2 years at time of hire.
